Menzieshill High School pupils recently took part in the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ photo competition. Four first year pupils and three second year pupils all came together to produce a freeze scene with an anti-racism theme. The photo poster was based around football and they had a referee holding a red card to a player who had been injured because of a racist attack.
The pupils split themselves into two groups wearing black and white costumes. With the help of their Modern Studies and English teacher, they sent their pictures in to the competition. The group are proud of the certificate they received for participation.
The pupils have said they were very proud to take part in the competition.

Anti-Bullying Procedures

New Anti-Bullying procedures have been introduced in school following communication and consultation with pupils, parents and staff over an 18 month period.

Congratulations to Menzieshill High School’s Water Polo team who participated in the recent secondary active schools league, taking part in 3 challenging rounds against schools across the city. All pupils played tremendously and Menzieshill were Overall Joint Winners having been undefeated in the final round of games. The team consisted of Braden Henderson, Emma Coupar, Hannah Edwards, Kirsty Bell, Liam Irons, Jack Neave, Kieran Neave and Chris Rae. Well Done!!!

An audience of S3 pupils were held enthralled by author Catherine MacPhail as she talked to them about her novels and how she came to write them. They had been reading her award winning novel “Fighting Back” in class and were so enthusiastic about it, borrowing many of her other titles from the library, that Miss Scott the librarian arranged for her to come and talk to them.

Her infectious enthusiasm and story-telling had them thoroughly engaged and when she read them the first chapter of her new novel “Mosi’s War” you could almost feel the frustration that they would have to wait months before they could find out what happened next. Cathy involved members of the audience as well, making them characters in the stories she told as she showed how a novel developed and after answering questions from the audience she left us with our very own challenge: the first line of a story for us to write!

Molly Fowlie, Callum Ewan and Liam Dunn represented Menzieshill HS in the annual Powerpoint Challenge. Hosted by the Claverhouse Training Group, teams of three pupils from schools across the city are challenged to research and present on a Standard Grade Modern Studies issue. Although ‘Team Menzieshill’ did not win, they did come a creditable joint-second overall.

National Award Winner – S3/4 Powerpoint Investigation

Congratulations to Bradley Evans who was awarded first prize in a national Modern Studies S3/4 PPt. Competition. Bradley’s entry on ‘The ways Government helps dependent groups’, was judged as, “Accurate, thoroughly researched and well-presented and fully deserving of an award.”

Jim McGovern MP paid a visit to the Modern Studies Department in early January. After giving an overview of his past and the work of an MP in parliament and the constituency, Jim went ‘open to question’. The first issue raised by S5/6 pupils, which was no surprise, was with regard to Jim’s views on the forthcoming independence vote. After an extended discussion of the pros and cons of independence, pupils also asked about votes at 16 years, changes to benefit entitlement and unemployment and young people. Jim’s visit was a follow-up to the pupils’ visit to the Houses of Parliament in September. Jim is pictured with S6 pupils Alissa Dolan and Grant Hamilton.  

Pupils in S3 will visit the Scottish Parliament in March where they will meet constituency MSP Joe Fitzpatrick.

A variety of pupils ranging from first to third year pupils from Menzieshill High School recently achieved third place in the Rock Challenge event which was held in the Caird Hall, Dundee. As well as coming in third, they also managed to pick up 5 awards, some of which included; Healthy Lifestyle Award School, Community Support Award and Healthy Lifestyle Quiz award.

Rock Challenge aimed to educate pupils about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The staff involved with Rock Challenge explained to the group that Rock Challenge’s aims were to promote and highlight the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drugs and the pupils learned a great deal about the different dangers; some of which they were not aware of before they became involved in the programme.

The group worked extremely hard to both compose dances and rehearse them. They rehearsed tirelessly on a Tuesday and Thursday evening after school and even found themselves putting in the extra hours over the weekend.   The group found that they were less at risk of becoming involved in dangerous situations including drugs, alcohol and tobacco because they were so busy with rehearsals and preparations.

In order to prepare for Rock Challenge the group agreed to come into school on the in-service day to spend the whole day brushing up on their performance and ensuring they had all of the props that they needed. Their hard work and commitment paid off and the group were enormously proud of their achievements.
