Tesco opening
Menzieshill High and Charleston Primary Schools each received a donation to celebrate the launch of Dundee’s newest supermarket.

The new Tesco Extra on South Road opened yesterday (9th February) when pupils from Charleston Primary School and members of Menzieshill High School’s pipe band each received a £500 donation for their school as part of the store’s launch celebrations.
Jan Ireland, Charleston Primary School head teacher, said: “I would like to thanks Tesco for the kind donation. We intend to put the money towards some readying materials to support the literacy group, which in turn will greatly enhance their learning experiences.”
Menzieshill High School’s head teacher George Laidlaw said: “We are delighted with the donation which will go towards our pupil social area so all the pupils can benefit from it. I asked the pipe band to represent our school as they are members of the Dundee 6th and 8th Boys Brigade, and have been Scottish champions three times.”
Store staff Wendy Urquhart and Karen Grady then cut the ribbon to officially open the store for business. Wendy and Karen are the longest serving members of staff from the Lochee and South Road Tesco superstores, and were asked to officially open the store as recognition of their many years of service.
Karen, a customer services assistant, has been a Tesco employee for 23 years, and worked at the Lochee superstore for over 17 of those years. Wendy has worked for Tesco for 25 years and is a Team Leader in the Dairy department.
Store Manager Keith Davis said: “I am delighted that pupils from Menzieshill High School and Charleston Primary School came to join in the celebrations with us. The boys in the pipe band were brilliant and we were very impressed with their performances.”
Keith added: “As Wendy and Karen have worked for Tesco for years, I asked them to open the store as way of recognising and thanking them for their years of hard work and service.
“Our first day was brilliant. The store was busy and customer feedback was great, and I am very proud of my staff who worked hard to make the day a success.”
Keith added: “I hope that our customers continue to enjoy the new store and all its services, and I look forward to the store playing an active role in the local community.”
The launch celebrations do not end there! From 10am – 4pm on Saturday 14th February, the store is hosting a Valentine’s makeover with top TV clothing expert Jill Pollitt who will be on hand to offer customers all the latest fashion advice. A make up artist and hair stylist will also be on hand to offer customers great hair and makeup tips, all for free.
The store and its petrol station are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
