World Maths Day 2010

Menzieshill High School pupils will participate in the World Maths Day on Wednesday 3 March.
They will join together with more than 2 million students from over 200 countries in the annual quest to set a world record in answering over 450 million maths questions — a fun way to improve mental arithmetic skills.
This year features an exciting new format with multi-levels for all age groups.
Teachers, parents and media are invited to participate for the first time. Menzieshill have registered learners at the World Maths Day website throughout February, and then signed in to begin practicing their online problem-solving right away.
The actual World Maths Day contest takes place on March 3.
Dundee City Council Education Convener Liz Fordyce visited the school to wish the pupils well in their quest.
She commented “I think it is very important for children to have an appreciation of maths and numbers as it is a skill they will use through-out their whole lives. This is a curriculum for excellence in action and I am delighted to see so many of our young people enjoying a Maths challenge. It is also important that pupils and parents can continue their work at home and it is great that many Menzieshill parents will be involved.”
The day was organised by Principal Teacher Gerry Harkins and Mathematics staff: Colleen Jelly, Eleanor Mackie, George Rew and Gavin Squair. Library Resource Co-ordinator Elspeth Scott has opened the Library to give as many pupils as possible the opportunity to take part.
