Monsoon in Menzieshill

We need your help… There has been a major disaster in Menzieshill.   A cyclone has hit Charleston, Dryburgh and Lochee.   Due to global warming huge areas of Longforgan, Inchture and the Carse of Gowrie have been flooded.   The Red Cross and Oxfam are involved in providing emergency help.   Pupils in Menzieshill High School, which is above flood levels, have been asked to form an emergency team.

What would you do?

During 2007 National Enterprise week, first year pupils were busy in most of their subjects doing work related to a fictitious disaster – a major flood in Menzieshill. Here are some of the activities they were involved in:

English pupils produced a news bulletin informing the public about the disaster. Other pupils performed in a play, while another class wrote poems about how a disaster like a flood would affect ordinary people. Other pupils produced newspaper reports.

RME pupils made posters about helping each other.

Science pupils investigated how good different materials were at stopping water from entering a building.

Music pupils created music depicting a storm.

Technical pupils built models of emergency shelters.

Geography pupils drew maps of wind directions, rainfall and the effects of a monsoon.

In French pupils examined European weather patterns.

In Modern Studies, a helper from the RED CROSS came in and worked with pupils in looking at the issues affecting people in a disaster.

Business Studies pupils produced posters appealing for help.
