Content of Standard Grade Course

The following seven topics are covered:

• Scottish and UK Politics
• Trade Unions
• Dependent groups - the unemployed, families with children, the elderly
• The USA
• International Alliances (including NATO, the EU and the UN)
• Developing countries
  

Modern Studies helps pupils understand many of the world’s important issues, helping them reach their own decisions based on facts.

The ability to plan, collect and present information is enhanced.

Skills and understanding are developed in the interpretation and use of tables, charts and graphs.

Investigative tasks such as writing letters, making visits, carrying out surveys and interviewing people are an essential part of the course.

Pupils will test the accuracy of what they have found out. Individual and group work is encouraged.

There will be opportunities for discussion and debate.

 

Assessment

Assessment is in the form of homework and classwork.

There are internal exams in S3 and a preliminary examination in S4.

 

Career Relevance

Standard Grade Modern Studies is welcomed by the majority of employers as a general qualification because of its relevance to contemporary society.

Modern Studies is useful in every aspect of employment later in life. 

 

Many of the “soft skills” that are today looked for from employers are encouraged as part of learning and teaching in Modern Studies.
