CHOICES AT 14+ : Role of Support for Learning Staff

The Support for Learning department provides support and extra help in all areas of the curriculum for those pupils who require it.  This may be due to prolonged absence, or because a pupil has a specific learning difficulty or because a pupil may require help in acquiring basic concepts.

Most of the extra support for pupils is given within the classroom working with the class teacher.  However some pupils are sometimes withdrawn for short periods of time so that they can benefit from additional intensive teaching.

Support for Learning teachers are also involved in curriculum development, working with subject teachers to differentiate their courses.

The department co-ordinates the provision for pupils with additional support needs with the S.Q.A.  This can mean that pupils with certain learning difficulties e.g. Dyslexia or physical disabilities can have extra time, or a scribe or specially enlarged examination papers etc. for their S.Q.A. examinations.

Any parent who feels concerned about their child should contact:

Mrs. Allan, Principal Teacher of Support for Learning.
