CHOICES AT 14+ : Home Economics
Courses and Levels of Certification
Standard Grade Home Economics at General and Credit Levels.
Access3/Intermediate 1 courses in Hospitality and Health and Food Technology.
Regular attendance is essential to enable practical work to be completed and internally assessed.
Pupils must participate in each practical lesson. Containers, money and apron should be brought each time.
Content of the Standard Grade Course
The following areas of study are incorporated into the two year course:
- Diet and health
- Physical and emotional needs
- Hygiene
- Safety
- Design and use of equipment
- Materials and resources
- Consumer awareness
- Importance of time, money and energy
Assessment
Pupils are assessed on the following elements :
- Knowledge and Understanding
- Handling Information
- Practical and Organisational Skills
Content of Access 3 / Hospitality Course
This course consists of the following units:
- Cookery processes
- Food Preparation Techniques
- Organisation of Practical Skills
- Food Hygiene for the Hospitality Industry
Assessment
- Internal assessment of individual units build up to a course award at Access 3
