School Events
A debatable start
The debating club at Menzieshill High School has had a very exciting start to the new session. S3 and S4 members of the club were asked to help at the finals of the World Schools Debating Championship which was held across all the secondary schools in Dundee between 18th and 26th August. Menzieshill hosted teams from many countries including Barbados, Japan, Singapore and Poland. The debating club members acted as Chairpersons and Timekeepers for the debates, very responsible positions which they filled extremely well and the judges complimented the school on its contribution. Car Boot Sale - but in the library!
As part of Menzieshill High School’s Red Nose Day fundraising efforts, three enterprising third year pupils organised a car boot sale on Thursday 17th March. Kyle Mason, Nikki Green and Blair Brady planned and organised the sale, writing to staff to ask for contributions, designing posters and ensuring customers turned up. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather conditions the sale could not be held outside but relocated to the school library it proved very popular with its many customers delighted with the bargains they picked up. The sale raised a total of £62.00 for Red Nose Day.

Booked for Success!
A group of pupil librarians from Menzieshill High School had the opportunity to do some hands-on book selection thanks to a generous donation from Dundee Book Events. The outing was several weeks in the planning. The whole library team conducted market research among their peers, collecting recommendations for books they thought the library should have, and then the book buying team had a training session with Miss Scott, the librarian, to learn how to choose the best books .
Then on Thursday 24th February the buying group and Miss Scott went down to Waterstone’s bookshop to make their selection. It was a difficult job to choose from among so many good books, but the team have added over 60 books to the LRC which they are confident their fellow pupils will enjoy.
It was particularly exciting to have the opportunity to buy these books just before World Book Day on March 3rd. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest factor in future personal success in life (OECD report), so the chance to add more new, exciting titles to the library is very much appreciated and we are very grateful to Dundee Book Events for the opportunity.
Languages at work
On Monday 21 February Menzieshill High School held their sixth Languages in Work event, where S4 pupils have the chance to feel first hand what it’s like to use another language in a work environment. This year the business language was French, and the pupils joined companies such as Renault, Michelin and Auchan. Once the initial nerves were overcome, they confidently carried out all the tasks required by their companies - booking hotel accommodation for a visiting businessman, arranging transport from France to Dundee, making a phone call to arrange to meet a visitor (and later meeting them at the right time and place!). Pupils could also choose to attend an interview for a summer job in France currently being advertised on the net, and interview a visiting motivational speaker. While some pupils preferred to hone their skills in one or two tasks, most happily tried them all, and found it challenging but good fun.
Each year local businesses generously allow us to benefit from their French or German employees, who take on the role of tourist officer, interviewer, or visitor for the afternoon. This year we had six guests: Lionel Dupuis and Laurence Ducroix from the Scottish Crop Research Institute, Clémence Tardy, Pierre Yves, and Marc Girondain from Dundee College, and Morgaro Gomis from Dundee United. We are very grateful to them all for giving up their time, for being so encouraging and understanding, and for providing such a positive experience for our pupils.
